  • Douglas McGraw named President of Hayssen Flexible Systems

    Douglas McGrawDuncan, S.C. — Sept. 21, 2017 — Hayssen Flexible Systems, a Barry-Wehmiller company, is pleased to announce that Douglas McGraw will begin serving as its President on September 25, 2017. Hayssen, headquartered in Duncan, is a global packaging machinery supplier specializing in flexible packaging solutions for a wide range of industries, including bakery, confectionary snack foods, frozen foods, fresh produce and cheese.

    McGraw brings to the role extensive experience leading domestic and international businesses in both consumer durables and packaged goods. He has a strong track record of achieving profitable growth by leveraging Lean operational practices, and deploying strategic vision and exceptional coaching and leadership.

    “Doug has a passion for customers—knowing them personally and understanding their needs, building trust and delivering solutions that are critical to their success,” said Carol O’Neill, Group President of Barry-Wehmiller’s Packaging Platform. “This, along with his passion for people, and his experience running and growing global businesses known for great products, will make him an outstanding leader for Hayssen, one who will help build an even stronger flexible packaging business and evolve BW Packaging Solutions.”

    McGraw most recently served as Chief Operating Officer of Topa Equities Ltd. in Los Angeles. Prior to that, he held key leadership roles at P&G, Graco and Masco Corporation. He has a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Duke University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University.

    The new VERUS intermittent vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine, featuring an advanced sanitary design, READ MORE combines proven state-of-the-art servo technology and valuable customer-driven features to efficiently produce a wide range of bag formats including stand-up, sizes and shapes sealing a range of polyethylene and/or heat-seal materials.  Customer benefits include quick bag-format changeovers and speeds of up to 110 bags per minute. The VERUS will be shown operating under a gantry-mounted multi-head weigher.

    The Rose Forgrove stainless version MERLIN BLU flow wrapper is innovatively engineered with an easy-to-clean design and several tool-free removal features making it suitable for a wide range of challenging industries, such as frozen and wet products. The hygienic features of the MERLIN BLU include sloped surfaces and rounded legs minimising debris build up. The easy-to- clean features are matched by technical highlights of “no product-no bag”, which minimises film waste, “misplaced product” detection and the intuitive, icon-based HMI which facilitates quick, repeatable changeovers. The new transparent guard design provides operators with a clear view of the whole wrapping process. The wrapping speed for the Rose Forgrove MERLIN BLU is 100 (single jaw) to 200 (twin jaw) packs per minute and the pack range is up to 120mm high by 300mm wide, according to product and film.

    Con una capacità produttiva di oltre 100 milioni di pezzi all’anno, Tiger Tim Products è il maggiore produttore al mondo di esche per il fuoco e offre una gamma in continua evoluzione di prodotti a marchio proprio o a marchio dei suoi clienti e distributori. Una larga fetta della produzione viene esportata tramite una rete di distribuzione mondiale.

    Lo stabilimento produttivo di Mold, nel Galles del Nord, risponde ai più stringenti requisiti di qualità e sicurezza. Nel progetto di confezionamento di Tiger Tim, le sfide erano rappresentate da un prodotto difficile da trattare, un ambiente duro e aggressivo e la richiesta di una velocità elevata.

    L’applicazione richiedeva lo studio e la costruzione di una linea di confezionamento completamente automatica per blocchetti di esche per il fuoco, con velocità fino a 500 pezzi al minuto.

    Hayssen Flexible Systems ha risposto a questa sfida con una linea di confezionamento Schib ad alta velocità, che comprende un nastro di trasferimento a chicane ideato per ricevere ed allineare i prodotti in arrivo dalla pressa a monte. Un caricatore multi-telo con 6 assi elettronici alimenta poi i prodotti su una macchina confezionatrice orizzontale equipaggiata con 4 barre di saldatura, doppio porta bobina, cambio bobina automatico e fotocellula per la centratura del film prestampato. Un grande vantaggio offerto da questa linea è costituito dai teli estraibili, facilmente rimuovibili senza l’ausilio di utensili, per una rapidissima ed efficiente attività di pulizia e manutenzione.

    Il cliente Tiger Tim è rimasto talmente colpito dalla qualità della nuova linea di confezionamento e dal supporto offerto da Hayssen Flexible Systems che ha deciso di acquistare altre due linee automatiche Schib, per confezionare anche il formato più grande. Le due linee, che sono state installate a luglio, includono due flow pack Schib CO50 elettroniche complete di caricatori ortogonali. I prodotti, che escono dalla produzione su un nastro, arrivano con il lato lungo avanti e vengono introdotti a 90° tra gli spintori del nastro di alimentazione delle flow pack. In questa maniera, i prodotti più grandi vengono confezionati con il lato corto avanti, a una velocità di 240 colpi al minuto in totale.

    E’ stato previsto un dispositivo di controllo da remoto che opera nella massima sicurezza, per permettere la diagnostica e l’assistenza a distanza.

    Con una capacidad de producción de más de 100 millones de piezas al año, Tiger Tim Products es el productor más grande del mundo de pastillas de encendido y ofrece una gama en constante evolución de productos de su propia marca o de sus clientes y distribuidores. Una gran parte de la producción se exporta a través de una red de distribución mundial. 

    La planta de producción de Mold en el Norte de Gales cumple con los más rigurosos requisitos de calidad y seguridad. En el proyecto de envasado de Tiger Tim, los desafíos estaban representados por un producto difícil de manejar, un ambiente duro y agresivo y la solicitud de alta velocidad.

    La aplicación requería el estudio y la construcción de una línea de envasado totalmente automática para pastillas de encendido, con velocidad hasta 500 piezas por minuto.

    Hayssen Flexible Systems respondió a este desafío con una línea de envasado Schib de alta velocidad, que incluye una cinta de transferencia de chicana diseñada para recibir y alinear los productos entrantes de la prensa en sentido ascendente. Un cargador multi-lona con 6 ejes electrónicos luego alimenta los productos sobre una máquina envasadora horizontal equipada con 4 ejes de soldadura, doble lleva bobina, cambio bobina automático y fotocélula por el centrado del film preimpreso. Una gran ventaja ofrecida por esta línea consiste en las lonas extraíbles, fácilmente desmontables sin herramientas, para una rápida y eficiente tarea de limpieza y mantenimiento.

    El cliente Tiger Tim quedó tan impresionado con la calidad de la nueva línea de envases y el soporte ofrecido por Hayssen Flexible Systems, que decidió comprar dos más líneas automáticas de Schib, para evasar también el formato más grande. Las dos líneas, que se instalaron en Julio, incluyen dos flow pack Schib CO50 electrónicas con cargadores ortogonales. Los productos, que salen de la producción en una cinta, llegan con el lado largo delantero y se introducen a 90 ° entre los empujadores de la cinta de alimentación del las flow pack. De esta manera, los productos más grandes se empaquetan con el lado corto hacia adelante, a una velocidad de 240 golpes al minuto en total

    Tiger Tim VideoWith a production capacity of over 100 million consumer units, Tiger Tim Products is the leading manufacturer of firelighters in the world and offers a continuously developing product range in private label and distributor brands. Much of its production is being exported via a worldwide network of distribution partners.

    Their manufacturing plant located in Mold, North Wales, meets the most stringent quality and safety requirements. Their packaging challenges were a difficult product to handle, a harsh, aggressive environment, and a high speed requirement. The application required a fully automatic line to be designed and manufactured for small firelighter blocks to be wrapped at speeds of up to 500 ppm.

    Hayssen Flexible Systems responded with a Schib high speed fully automatic wrapping system, including a chicane transfer belt system devised to receive and align the products arriving from the upstream manufacturing press. A multi-belt feeder with 6 servo axis then feeds the products onto a horizontal flow wrapper equipped with 4 crimpers, a twin reel holder, film auto splicer, and a photocell for pre-printed film registration. Furthermore, the line offers the great advantage of tool-less belt replacement, enabling a very quick and efficient cleaning and maintenance. 

    Paul Edwards, Operations Manager at Tiger Tim Products, said “We opted for Schib – Hayssen Flexible Systems because of their ability to supply a complete system of superior quality and a level of support required”. “It has been quite a challenging project” quotes Ian Bickerdike, Hayssen Business Development Director for Horizontal Systems, “and we are happy to have been able to meet the customer’s specification requirements.     At Tiger Tim they have been so impressed by the quality of their new high speed packaging line and the support offered by Hayssen Flexible Systems that they decided to purchase two more fully automatic wrapping lines from Schib, to pack their big firelighter blocks as well.

    The two lines, installed in July 2017, includes two Schib CO50 electronic Flow Wrappers complete with  cross feeders. Products arrive from customer’s processing carousel wide edge leading and are fed at 90° between the infeed cleats of the flow wrappers. Like that, the big firelighter blocks are packed narrow edge leading, at a speed of 240 ppm in total. A secure remote service unit has been included so to allow remote diagnostics and troubleshooting.

    Situada en la región de Friuli Venezia Giulia, la empresa está en el negocio desde más de 40 años y se enorgullece de sus productos frescos y saludables que se distribuyen ampliamente desde los albores de toda la región y en el norte de Italia.

    Friulana Panini TeamDe acuerdo con las necesidades del cliente, esta máquina envasadora -  equipada con un sistema de sellado box motion aún más rápido – empaqueta sándwiches y bocadillos a una velocidad de 55 piezas por minuto, pero la hemos probada con éxito a 75 paquetes / minuto (aproximadamente el 30% más que nuestro modelo anterior CO 50 TG).

    La máquina es completamente electrónica con tecnología de control multi-eje. Monta 5 servo motores independientes, respectivamente por el control de la cinta de alimentación, del paño de traslado a las barras de soldadura, de las ruedas de soldadura, del movimiento y del cierre de las barras de sellado.

    Ideal por el confezionamento en atmósfera modificada, el sistema de soldadura "box motion" - si usado con film idóneo a barrera - logra en realizar soldaduras del tipo de alto mantenimiento. Esto devuelve la máquina apta por productos que solicitan una soldadura hermética, como en las aplicaciones que preven inserción de gas.

    La máquina envasadora Schib CO 50 Tg es de todas formas capaz de utilizar varios materiales de envoltura, incluyendo polipropileno, film laminados y los film de barrera.

    La máquina está equipada con muchos accesorios, incluyendo la bobina de detección final, el desenrollador motorizado, la fotocélula para el centrado del film preimpreso y para el kit de inserción de gas (lanza + electroválvula).     Ubicata nella regione del Friuli Venezia Giulia, l’azienda è presente sul mercato da più di 40 anni ed è orgogliosa dei suoi prodotti freschi e genuini che vengono distribuiti capillarmente fin dall’alba su tutto il territorio regionale e in Nord Italia.

    Ideale per il confezionamento in atmosfera modificata, il sistema di saldatura “box motion” - se usato con idonei film a barriera - riesce a realizzare saldature ad alta tenuta.  Questo rende la macchina adatta per prodotti che richiedono una saldatura ermetica, come nelle applicazioni che prevedono inserimento di gas.

    La Flow Pack Schib CO 50 TG è comunque in grado di utilizzare vari materiali di incarto, incluso il polipropilene, i film laminati e i film barriera.

    La macchina è equipaggiata con molti accessori, fra cui il rilevamento fine bobina, lo sbobinatore motorizzato, la fotocellula per la centratura di film prestampati ed il kit per l’inserimento del gas (lancia + elettrovalvola).  Il controllo e la risoluzione di problemi a distanza sono possibili grazie a un dispositivo di servizio remoto all’avanguardia.

  • Schib’s CO50TG Flow Wrapper Provides Friulana Panini Increased Speeds

    Friulana Panini VideoWe have recently installed one of our latest Schib CO 50 TG at FRIULANA PANINI in Italy, a leader company in producing and packaging sandwiches, tramezzino sandwiches and pizza for the food service industry, including the hotel and catering industry and the vending machines market.

    Located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the company has been in the market for more than 40 years and prides itself on its fresh, genuine products that are widespread distributed in Northern Italy daily, beginning right at dawn.Friulana Panini Team

    In compliance with customer’s specifications, this packaging machine featuring faster box motion HFFS technology, is running sandwiches and tramezzino sandwiches at up to 55 per minute, but we successfully tested it up to 75 packs/min as well (30% faster than our previous CO 50 TG model).

    The machine is fully servo driven, featuring multi-axis drive technology with as many as 5 independent brushless motors so to control the in-feed conveyor, the belt before the sealing bars, the sealing wheels, the box motion as well as the closing of the sealing bars.

    Ideal for modified atmosphere packaging, the box motion system can deliver high integrity seals if used in conjunction with MAP barrier films. This makes the machine suitable for products that require hermetic sealing as in gas flush applications.

    In any case, the Schib CO 50 TG flow wrapper is capable of handling packaging materials that include polypropylene, laminated foil, and barrier films.

    Friulana Panini Close UpThe machine is equipped with many options, including reel run out detection, motorized film pre-feed, pre-printed film registration and gas flush kit (gas lance and valve). Remote diagnostics and troubleshooting are possible with State-of-the-Art remote service device.

  • Customer Solution: MH7 Upgrade Can Be Retrofitted to Existing Simionato Baggers

    MH7 Upgrade VideoWe have just released a new upgrade in line with our ongoing commitment to lifetime customer support for form-fill-seal equipment. This controls upgrade will allow customers to replace the electrical control system in MH7 and S12 baggers within the Simionato product line.  This offers an advantage to customers who are satisfied with the mechanical performance of older existing units, but need to update the electrical platforms and avoid the risk of phase out components. 

    The upgrade’s advantages include a simple and user-friendly operator interface with a color touch screen as well as updated safety guards. Viviana Basile, Hayssen’s Customer Service Representative, comments, “Our customers have driven this upgrade introduction. They have been happy with the MH7 and S12 models in the case of performance, but need to ensure that the electrical components do not expire. Now, they can quickly modernize older baggers with easier to set parameters, a wider recipe-memory and internet connection for tele-assistance.”

  • Santiveri's Healthy Foods Rely on Hayssen VFFS

    Integrated packaging lines weigh and bag various types of cereals

    Healthy Food and Natural Alternative In 1885, a young man named Jaime Santiveri in Barcelona, Spain was diagnosed with a severe lung disease. He tried every type of medicine available in the market at the time. The only option was to try a natural, alternative medicine and luckily for him, it was the right solution. With a healthy lifestyle and alternative medicine, Jaime Santiveri was able to successfully recover from the disease. So in 1914 he opened his first factory in Spain, where he produced his own products and the company has never stopped since.

     Today, Santiveri S.L. packs various types of genuine and healthy products. Cereals and bakery products are weighed and bagged on  Hayssen Logic 35 vertical form fill seal machines. The packaging line is equipped with special accessories for creating stand-up  quad bags, ranging in size from 100g to 1Kg. In order to make perfect bags, the VFFS includes a nip drive metering roll, heated plate system and updated quad sealing system. The end result is a perfectly sealed and formed quad bag at production rates of more than 40 bags per minute. The nip roller system simplifies and secures the film movement avoiding film slip while increasing speed, as well as extending the life of silicone pull belts.

    The customer visited Hayssen’s Italian factory in Padova and tested the Logic machine before it shipped to Spain. Javier Santiveri, grandson of the first Santiveri, says of this most recent order, “I buy Hayssen because I have several Simionato VFFS systems and through the years the service has evolved to meet our needs and we are satisfied.”

  • Artisanal Nougat Packaged by Arnaud Soubeyran with Four Schib Flow Wrappers

    ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN, the origins of which date back to 1837 starting with the marriage between talented confectioner Mr. Arnaud and Miss Soubeyran, is the most ancient producer of traditional nougats in Montélimar, France.  Run by the family’s third generation, the firm has nowadays broadened its range of confectionery and shares its know-how within the charming atmosphere of a museum entirely dedicated to nougat.

    For 15 years, ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN has packaged its Nougats, Calissons, Marshmallow and Pralines with three Schib Flow Wrappers and it has just recently purchased its fourth Schib, a new CO 50 that will soon be installed. Didier Honnore, Director of ARNAUD SOUBEYRAN, declares “Schib machines have always supported us efficiently, fully meeting our need to pack a wide range of sweets, biscuits, marshmallow and pastry. We are really satisfied, the machines are very flexible, reliable and easy to clean. Furthermore, they are backed up by a flawless after-sales service.     Nougat Packaging VideoThe CO50’s rotary motion twin jaws, operated by 3-axis drive technology, will allow speeds of up to 200 ppm. The machine is equipped with motorized film pre-feed, reel run out sensor, pre-printed film registration, and many other options.  

    Originally brown in color, made of honey, spices and walnuts, ‘Nux Gatum’ has spanned centuries from the ancient times up to present days.  Its journey from the East to Greece led it to Marseille where it set in under the name of ‘Nougat’ in the XVII century, among the 13 most typical Provencal desserts.  By going up the Rhône, a determining stop in Montélimar changed the brown color of this home-made confectionery into the white one and the walnuts into almonds.   • Sachs Peanuts Installs Hayssen Packaging Line for In-Shell Products

    Sachs Peanuts has a proud tradition of quality and service dating back four generations, family owned and operated for more than a century. Sachs processes, packages and distributes quality salted in-shell peanuts from the heart of the Virginia and the Carolina’s peanut growing regions. As industry leaders in private label and co-branded peanuts, they service retailers and wholesalers, including supplying peanuts to many popular restaurant chains.

    To meet market demands, Sachs recently invested in their Clarkton, North Carolina facility, including a new vertical form fill seal packaging system from Hayssen Flexible Systems. In an effort to continually improve, Sachs regularly works to develop new products and services to better serve their customers. As equally important is their commitment to on-time delivery and safety. Sachs chose a stainless steel washdown ULTIMA ST 13-22 bagging system from Hayssen Flexible Systems.  The equipment is constructed with stainless steel product contact surfaces designed to withstand the salt fines from the roasted and salted peanuts. The open access tubular frame provides ease of maintenance and cleaning for the machine operators as well. Hayssen also provided Sachs with an integrated Yamato 514 multi-head scale.

    The packaging line consists of a vibratory infeed conveyor with product screening. The infeed conveyor feeds product to a bucket elevator which elevates the peanuts to the height of the Yamato scale. Again, the product goes to a vibratory conveyor for a second screening of product, and then dispensing onto the scale at a steady rate.

    The peanuts are then dropped into the ULTIMA ST for form, fill and seal. The laminate film is pulled from a roll, formed over the forming tube, filled with the peanuts and then sealed as a completed bag. The packaging line also includes an incline conveyor that receives completed bags off the bagger and dispenses it onto a rotary table for manual case packing.

    Currently, Sachs is using this system to package a variety of package sizes, up to 8 different weights, anywhere from 8 oz to 5 lb pillow packages. The ULTIMA ST is well suited in that it offers quick changeovers with Allen-Bradley controls and HMI screen. The 8 oz packages are running at 75 packages per minute, while the larger 5 lb bags run at a consistent 40 packages per minute.

  • Reduce Air Consumption and Cost with Servo Jaw Retrofit for Ultima VFFS

    As in most areas of production, air has a huge impact not only in performance but also reflects a significant cost within everyday production.
     

    airconsumptionproductHayssens’ product development engineers have been working in partnership with one of our Key Account customers to develop a solution that addresses sealing issues directly related to air dependencies. As a solution, we created the Servo-Jaw Actuator update. This upgrade has been installed at our customer’s facility and has been running for over 6 months with no issues.

    The customer has been able to not only reduce air consumption overall for the specific line, but has also improved overall performance (bags per minute). This is due to consistent cycling provided by the servo motor that controls the overall sealing motion of the jaws. As the machine is operating, it experiences less faults thanks to no air needed to complete the hermetic seal.

    Our Key Account Customer is very encouraged with this update and project. So much so, that they have purchased 7 new machines with this actuator system.

  • Fruit Tarts as Sweet as Childhood Memories

    Forno Miotti TartsItalian-based Forno Miotti is a family-owned bakery established near Padua by Cesare Miotti back in 1930. The company, currently run by Cesare’s grandchildren Ferdinando and Luca Tabaschi, has been producing delicious bakery products with the same passion and care its founder had in the past. Forno Miotti’s specialties are artisanal fruit tarts, full of flavor and fragrance, like homemade cakes.

    To support the growing demand for these little bites of heaven, Forno Miotti has just recently installed a Schib CO50 packaging machine.

    Luca Tabaschi, Production Manager, explains his decision to turn to Schib. “In up-scaling our production we needed a dependable packaging machine that could offer us enough flexibility to pack our tarts selection. We opted for Schib because of their experience in the bakery industry.   • Pro Candy Wrapping at ProSweets & Propak

    We are exhibiting the Schib CO90E high-speed candy wrapper at the forthcoming ProSweets show in Cologne in January and at the Propak show in Johannesburg, South Africa in March. The state-of-the-art Schib CO 90E is a horizontal flow-pack machine specifically designed for candies and other small size confectionery products such as pellets, bubble gums, lozenges, toffees, tablets and lollipops.

    Several configurations of this model are available, including lollipop versions, customized feeders for hard-boiled candies, molded products and marshmallows, and multi-feeders for balls to be wrapped in assorted colors.

    T Wilson & SonsT.Wilson’s fresh carrots packaged on Hayssen Flexible Systems VFFS machine

    T.Wilson and Sons (Farmers) Ltd, a family-run business in Merseyside, England, farms a wide variety of high quality fresh produce. In order to pack all their fresh products, T.Wilson relied once again on Hayssen Flexible Systems’ technology, specifically a Simionato Logic vertical packaging machine.

    During the Pre-Dispatch Inspection, Rob Wilson explained his decision to buy the Logic bag maker, “I need a machine that is easy to use and when switched on, it just works. This is what I will get with the Simionato Logic 35 bagger. It is a simple machine, versatile and long lasting.”

    The customer’s existing weighing system feeds the Hayssen vertical packaging machine with fresh carrots. The carrots then fall into a custom-made cone and a forming tube. The tube has a shatterproof mechanism, which eliminates any problems related to film breakage during the product flow.

    Southern SaladsSouthern Salads, based in Kent in the UK has recently installed two Novus 350s to pack their Iceberg lettuce and other leaves. This installation is part of a major investment in their processing and packing facility.

    Southern Salads is a hugely successful family run business. Starting life off in markets in London, CEO & founder Ray Boakes developed the business by supplying shredded lettuce to multinational high street restaurant chains and has continued to serve this market ever since.

    Southern Salads is a long-standing Hayssen Flexible Systems’ customer who utilise several intermittent Sandiacre TG 320 machines to pack their products. When they decided to move forward with continuous motion packing, it was a logical move to choose Hayssen Flexible Systems’ machinery. Their new Novus produce specification machines have been specifically designed to improve speeds, pack integrity and decrease maintenance and servicing costs against current machines.

    The unique product stager device prevents product from getting into the end seals and the Novus’ Quali-seal jaws offer extended sealing times and increased pack seal integrity. The Novus’s independent bag squeezer reduces oxygen levels in the bag, while the gas flushing feature slows down bacterial growth, increasing the longevity of the product’s shelf life.
